High School Students Should Be Taught At North Carolina s...

Basic life skills are defined as psychosocial abilities for adaptive and positive behavior that enable individuals to deal effectively with the demands and challenges for everyday life (UNICEF). Taking that into consideration, high school students should be presented with the opportunity to take basic life skills courses within their high school career. In a way, it is ridiculous that basic life skills are not offered as a course in high school being that the students are there to get an education. It would be sensible if education was a combination of excelling in classes and life. When I think of basic life skills that should be taught in North Carolina’s public high schools, I think of skills such as, sewing, changing a tire, checking your oil, how to apply for a loan, how to buy a house, how to write a check, how to fill out a job application, the skills you would need to take care of yourself in the real world. I am targeting North Carolina’s public high schools because not only did I spend my entire high school career at a North Carolina public high school, but because I always wanted there to be a course like this to help develop and improve these skills, even though I was fortunate enough to learn them at home. I cannot completely say that skills along the lines of these were not taught at my school, because certain electives did glide over some of these skills but did not go into depth, which would have been more beneficial.
